INTERVIEW WITH LAS KELLIES

Coolest thing to overwhelm your friends with? Let me think…a post-punkband from Argentinia that’s been fronted by three sexy ladies? A band from Argentinia who sound like The Go Go’s on speed? Three ladies who wana give you the time of your life (well 25 minutes I guess) with the coolest punkrock you can imagine? Yesterday in Everett True’s blog, today in The Original Sin and let’s hope next year on some Belgian stage!!! Yes, Belgian stage…for once I wanna be a bit egoistic….
Here’s the interview…..

HELLO, PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELVES AND HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC THEN?
We are Kellies, a band from Buenos Aires, Argentina. We are a post punk band. We are Sil Kelly drums and vocals, Betty Kelly bass and vocals, Ceci Kelly guitar and vocals, J.J. Kelly percussion and vocals. Our music is intense and upbeat. The best thing is the live shows - that’s when we forget everything and have fun.

ARE YOU PUNK OR ARE YOU POP THEN?
Pop-punk, punk-pop, call it whatever you like!

YOU ARE FROM ARGENTINIA, HOW’S THE SCENE THERE AND HOW DO YOU FIT IN THAT?
In Argentina the scene is really alive, there are a lot of interesting musicians of different kinds of music.
After a couple of years playing in the circuit, we’ve got ourselves a nice following of fun-loving pogoers.

WHICH ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS?
Devo, Esg, B52, Delta Five, The Ramones, Slits, Gang of Four, Liquid Liquid. We also listen to a lot of dub, cumbia, afrobeat, folk… The greatest inspirations are curry and the band’s dog, Cuchufo.

I KIND OF THOUGHT YOU WERE LIKE A PUNKROCKVERSION FROM THE SHANGRI LA’S……WHAT DO YOU THINK??
We’d love to have their hairstyles and their voices! We’re always compared with bands like Delta 5, The Slits and ESG, but we love all female artists that you can shake your hips to.

IF I HEAR YOUR MUSIC, IT DEFINITELY SOUNDS LIKE YOU’RE HAVING THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE, NOT?
Exactly. You totally got it!

YOU RECENTLY WERE DISCOVERED BY EVERETT TRUE. HOW IMPORTANT IS THAT FOR YOU AND DO YOU THINK THAT CAN OPEN DOORS?
He is really nice, and he’s helped us a lot. We hope that will open some doors, but we’ve yet to see. Of course having totally random people wherever in the world listening to us is a total privilege that we’re really happy about.

YOU’RE A PUNKBAND SO HERE’S THE QUESTION: WHAT DOES PUNK MEAN TO YOU?
We are lot of things besides punk. For us, punk is like our mother, we learn a lot from it. We experience a lot of music, but punk is always there, like home.

SORRY, BUT DO PEOPLE IN SOUTH AMERICA STILL BUY RECORDS OR IS EVERYONE ON THE DOWNLOAD?
It’s really common to download music but there’s a hardcore group that still go crazy over records. We download but also buy records, both.

CONFESS US SOMETHING….WHAT’S THE MOST ROCK ‘N ROLL-THING YOU DID IN YOUR LIFE?
Everyday is a rocknroll extreme. We make doing the laundry look like a Suicide gig.
Or did you want to hear about that time Betty’s dress fell off on stage in London?

LAST QUESTIONS ARE QUESTIONS I ALWAYS ASK, I CALL IT THE TRADITIONAL ORIGINAL SIN-QUESTIONS… WHAT’S YOUR FAVE RECORD OF ALL TIME AND WHY?
Our all time favourite record is “Keep on Moving” from ESG.

WITH WHO WOULDN’T YOU MIND BEING STUCK IN AN ELEVATOR FOR 8 HOURS AND WHAT WOULD YOU DO THEN?
Go vegetarian!!

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM LAS KELLIES IN THE FUTURE?
The third album is coming soon, mixed by Dennis Bovell and released by a hot new local label called Crang Records, and soon another Europe tour. And sometime a Japanese tour!! Yeah!!

DO YOU WANT TO SAY SOMETHING SPECIAL TO OUR READERS?
Life is an adWenture, get on down to Buenos Aires and listen to some Cumbia Villera.
We also recommend you get into our local scene. We have a lot of great musicians: Nairobi, Siro Bercetche, Félix y Los Clavos, Daniel Melero, Betty Confetti y su Conjunto Tropical, Diosque, and a lot more.

THANK YOU!!!!!!
Thank you.
